Samsung launched a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered mobile application that can play an assistive role for those who suffer from speech disorders. The app, dubbed Impulse, is compatible with Android smartphones and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series. The app uses a technique known as rhythm therapy to help people find their speech rhythm and improve fluency. The Impulse app uses AI capabilities for natural language processing, to break down words into syllables, and to convert them into vibrations.

The announcement was made by Samsung Espana newsroom’s post, which stated, “Samsung Electronics Iberia and Cheil today announced the launch of Impulse, an application based on Artificial Intelligence to improve the daily lives of people with speech disorders, such as stuttering.” The app was developed in collaboration with the Speechcare & Stuttering Center to improve speech fluency.

Impulse essentially works through the Galaxy Watch 6 series smartwatches. The app uses a Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based algorithm to analyse and convert words into rhythmic vibrations. These vibrations are felt by the user on their wrist via the smartwatch. The rhythm assists the user in understanding the tempo of each phoneme or word, depending on the type of speech disorder they have. Samsung says this technique can help them avoid blocks in diction and facilitate fluency in speech.

Samsung reveals that the app has more than 250 rhythm and tone exercises designed to increase the difficulty as the user progresses in speech control. The progressive difficulty setting comes with four modes and each mode has three levels of exercises to practice words or phrases.

First mode is ‘Boost your voice’. It can be activated with a single touch after configuration. Users can choose the vibration pattern they want and once selected, it can be used for regular usage. When oral blockage occurs, it is activated. The second mode is ‘Boost your rhythm’, which helps in practising syllables. After the end of a session, the app also shows a performance report that can be shared with a speech therapist.

The third mode is ‘Boost your tone’ which helps the user practise the intonation of the phrases. Finally, the fourth mode is ‘Boost your speech’ which lets the user practise their own texts, written directly in the application or by uploading a file with the narration. Here, the AI analyses the text to create a vibration pattern.

Currently, the app is only available in the Google Play Store in Spain for smartphones running Android 10 and later. It is not known if Samsung will expand the app in other regions as well.

Samsung updated its native artificial intelligence (AI) suite of features for its smartphones, Galaxy AI, with support for new languages and dialects. The update has added three new languages and three dialects to the AI tool. The additions are part of the South Korean tech giant’s Spring 2024 update. The company has also revealed its plans to add four more languages and two more dialects later this year. Once those languages are added, it will bring the total number of supported languages to 20.

The announcement was made by Samsung US newsroom’s post. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Committed to democratizing mobile AI for all, Galaxy AI’s language expansion this year will allow even more Galaxy users to communicate beyond language barriers on a scale that is completely unique to Samsung. We will continue to innovate our technology and pioneer premium mobile AI experiences so that even more users are equipped with the right tools to unleash their unlimited potential.”

The three new languages which are being added to Galaxy AI are Arabic, Indonesian, and Russian. Alongside Australian English, Cantonese, and Canadian French dialects are also being added. Further, later this year, Samsung is planning to add four more languages including Romanian, Turkish, Dutch and, Swedish. Two more dialects — traditional Chinese and European Portuguese — will also be added.

Language support is important for several features in Galaxy AI. For instance, Live Translate which produces two-way, real-time voice and text translations of phone calls, requires the AI to understand the language and dialect in order to translate them. Similarly, the Interpreter feature can instantly translate live conversations through a split-screen view so that two people standing opposite each other can see each other’s translation. This also requires language support for the AI to analyse speech.

Galaxy AI was introduced by the tech giant with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. However, recently, it was expanded to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series through the One UI 6.1 update.

The prodigal Prince has returned, and his comeback has gone down so well that he is doing it a second time. After his Metroidvania adventures in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which came out in January, gaming’s iconic dual-blade wielding royalty is coming back for seconds in The Rogue Prince of Persia, a new 2D action-platforming rogue-lite title, arriving in Early Access on Steam on May 14. Developed by Dead Cells maker Evil Empire and published by Ubisoft, the next Prince of Persia game flaunts a colourful, cartoony art style and features platforming and action combat familiar to the series.

The Rogue Prince of Persia was revealed with a trailer during the Triple-I Initiative livestream, showing off striking cinematics and a bit of gameplay. According to Ubisoft, the game is set in a fictional Ctesiphon, the capital city of the Persian Empire, under siege from a possessed army of Huns. Unlike The Lost Crown, here Players will get to take control of the eponymous prince, who possesses a magical bola that resurrects him on each death.

As expected from a rogue-lite, players will die, only to be resurrected and thrown back at the beginning. The cycle keeps repeating until players upgrade and upskill to become good enough to complete a full run of the game. With each attempt, players will explore new biomes, try out new weapons, gain valuable knowledge, find and equip trinkets and upgrade their gear as they attempt to save the city from the invasion.

The trailer shows off an acrobatic prince who can wall run, spin jump and slide around deadly obstacles in tricky platforming sections. Players will progress through procedurally generated levels, fighting off Huns imbued with the dark shamanic magic and corrupted creatures through colourful and diverse regions inspired by Persian architecture.

The prince will also have a variety of weapons at his disposal to aid in combat. Players can equip twin daggers, spears, broad swords, and axes, and also add a selection of shields, bows, grappling hooks and more as secondary weapons, according to Ubisoft.

Developers Evil Empire are no strangers to the roguelike genre, having co-developed Dead Cells with Motion Twin. According to Ubisoft, the studio approached the publisher with their own rogue-lite take on Prince of Persia. The iconic game series made a comeback after years of absence early this year with the launch of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. A 2.5D Metroidvania action-platformer, The Lost Crown marked a fresh beginning for the franchise, featuring responsive platforming and fast-paced combat. In our review of the game, we found Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown an inspired take on the genre that forges a new path for the future of the series. The next Prince of Persia title seems to have taken that same path, too.

The Rogue Prince of Persia will release in Early Access on Steam on May 14, with Ubisoft confirming release on other platforms at a later point.

Amazon is targeting merchandise exports worth $20 billion (nearly Rs. 1,66,500 crore) from India by 2025 by adding thousands of small sellers to its e-commerce platform, a company official said on Friday. 

“We are very encouraged by the number of entrepreneurs who signed up this year. We are looking to scale up,” Bhupen Wakankar, director global trade, Amazon told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event, referring to plans for exports.

There was huge demand for “Made in India” organic health supplements, homeware like bath towels, jute rugs, and robotic games for children ahead of the Black Friday Cyber Monday sale, an 11-day shopping period from Friday, Wakankar said. 

Launched in 2015 with a handful of sellers, Amazon Global Trade, the business to consumers (B2C) exports platform of the e-commerce giant, is gaining traction in India.

The company has added more than 100,000 small manufacturers to sell a wide range of products to overseas customers, he said.

“Some of the sellers are first time exporters, including those who left their corporate jobs to start e-commerce exports,” he said.

Thousands of small exporters, who earlier lacked access to global markets, have seen 70 percent business growth annually through e-commerce platform, which provided logistics support and access to more than 200 million Amazon Prime members globally, he said. 

This comes as India’s exports of goods declined 7 percent year-on-year during first seven months of this fiscal year. 

On the e-commerce platform, the highest growth was seen in categories like beauty, apparels, home, kitchen, furniture, and toys.

Holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year were driving sales of Indian products in markets such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Germany.

To encourage exporters, Wakankar said, Amazon had slashed the subscription fees for its global selling programme from $120 (nearly Rs. 1,000) to $1 (nearly Rs. 84) for the first three months for exporters signing up before March 31.

Amazon.com on Friday announced it is trimming jobs at its Alexa voice assistant unit, citing shifting business priorities and a greater focus on generative artificial intelligence.

The cuts affect several hundred employees working on Alexa, according to the email. A spokeswoman declined to elaborate on exactly how many were affected.

“We’re shifting some of our efforts to better align with our business priorities, and what we know matters most to customers — which includes maximising our resources and efforts focused on generative AI,” Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Fire TV, said in the email. “These shifts are leading us to discontinue some initiatives.”

Amazon has been pulling back in a variety of divisions this month, including in its music and gaming divisions and some human resources roles. 

While most of the jobs affected were in the devices division, a few were working on Alexa-related products in a different unit, a spokeswoman said. Many companies are shifting resources to generative AI, which can create software code and lengthy text responses from short prompts.

Alexa is a voice assistant that can be used to set timers, ask search queries, play music, or as a home automation hub.

Reuters reported in September that morale in the devices division had suffered over concerns about what some viewed as a weak product pipeline. In particular, people familiar with the matter pointed to the Alexa voice assistant, now nearly a decade old, as having failed to keep pace in the age of generative artificial intelligence. 

Amazon said at the time that “to suggest that a few anecdotes paint a picture of reality for an organization as large and diverse as Devices and Services is inaccurate,” and that it stood by its products.

Amazon has said its devices and services business is not profitable, without providing figures.

Only last month the device unit got a new chief, Panos Panay, who joined the company from Microsoft, replacing David Limp, a 13-year veteran who is leaving later this year to head Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket company. Panay had overseen development of the Surface tablet.

Amazon has struggled to generate any profits from Alexa, which many people use through Echo speakers or video screens. Most efforts to make money from it have centered on easing purchasing from Amazon.com.

The Seattle-based online retailer’s voice assistant products compete with offerings from Alphabet and Apple.

Amazon has cut more than 27,000 jobs across the company over the past year, part of a wave of US tech layoffs after the industry hired heavily people during the pandemic. 

The latest cuts come even as Amazon reported third-quarter net income that far exceeded analyst estimates and forecast revenue in the year’s final quarter roughly in line with expectations. The fourth quarter is Amazon’s most crucial, as it includes holiday shopping.

In the email, Rausch said he remained optimistic about Alexa. 

“Incorporating a new large language model into a voice-forward, personal AI, has been and continues to be an enormous scientific and engineering challenge,” he wrote, using another term for generative AI.

As evidenced above, there aren’t many popular releases this month, causing PlayStation fans to once again raise concerns about the value of holding a PS Plus subscription, especially after Sony raised the prices of its 12-month plans, earlier this year. The company did launch 4K cloud streaming in October, but that’s only available to PS Plus Premium members, that too in select regions only. Short-term memberships are expensive in the long run and so, several fans have expressed their disappointment these past few months by cancelling PS Plus subscriptions. For what it’s worth, new 12-month PS Plus memberships are now available at a 30 percent discount, thanks to PlayStation’s Black Friday sale.

As usual, the November Game Catalog was unveiled on the PlayStation Blog and will be available exclusively to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe members. Last month’s catalogue included Gotham Knights, Disco Elysium, and Alien Isolation to name just a few.

The board of the company behind ChatGPT late on Friday fired OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — to many, the human face of generative AI — sending shock waves across the tech industry.

OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will serve as interim CEO, the company said, adding that it will conduct a formal search for a permanent CEO.

The announcement blindsided many employees who discovered the abrupt management shuffle from an internal announcement and the company’s public facing blog. 

“Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” OpenAI said in the blog without elaborating.

Greg Brockman, OpenAI president and co-founder, who stepped down from the board as chairman as part of the management shuffle, quit the company, he announced on messaging platform X late on Friday. “Based on today’s news, I quit,” he wrote.

Backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft, OpenAI kicked off the generative AI craze last November by releasing its ChatGPT chatbot, which became one of the world’s fastest-growing software applications.

Trained on reams of data, generative AI can create brand-new human-like content, helping users spin up term papers, complete science homework and even write entire novels. After ChatGPT’s launch, regulators scrambled to catch up: the European Union revised its AI Act undefined and the US kicked off AI regulation efforts.

Altman, who ran Y Combinator, is a serial entrepreneur and investor. He was the face of OpenAI and the wildly popular generative AI technology as he toured the world this year.

Altman posted on X shortly after OpenAI published its blog: “I loved my time at OpenAI. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people. will have more to say about what’s next later.”

Altman did not return requests for comment. OpenAI was not reachable for further comment.

Murati, who has worked for Tesla previously, joined OpenAI in 2018 and later became the company’s chief technology officer. She oversaw products launches including ChatGPT.

At an emergency all-hands meeting on Friday afternoon after the announcement, Murati sought to calm employees and said OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft is stable and its backer’s executives, including CEO Satya Nadella, continue to express confidence in the startup, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

“Microsoft remains committed to Mira and their team as we bring this next era of AI to our customers,” a spokesperson for the software maker told Reuters on Friday.

In a statement published on Microsoft’s website Nadella added: “We have a long-term agreement with OpenAI…  Together, we will continue to deliver the meaningful benefits of this technology to the world.”

Earthquake

Well wishers and critics piled onto digital forums as the news spread.

On X, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt called Altman “a hero of mine,” adding “He built a company from nothing to $90 billion (Rs. 7,50,000 crore) in value, and changed our collective world forever. I can’t wait to see what he does next. I, and billions of people, will benefit from his future work — it’s going to be simply incredible.”

“This is a shocker and Altman was a key ingredient in the recipe for success of OpenAI,” Daniel Ives, analyst at Wedbush Securities said. “That said, we believe Microsoft and Nadella will exert more control at OpenAI going forward with Altman gone.”

The full impact of the OpenAI surprise will unfold over time, but its fundraising prospects were an immediate concern. Altman was considered a master fundraiser who managed to negotiate billions of dollars in investment from Microsoft as well as having led the company’s tender offer transactions this year that fueled OpenAI’s valuation from $29 billion (nearly Rs. 2,41,500 crore) to over $80 billion (nearly Rs. 6,66,300 crore).

“In the short term it will impair OpenAI’s ability to raise more capital. In the intermediate term it will be a non-issue,” said Thomas Hayes, chairman at hedge fund Great Hill Capital.

Other analysts said Altman’s departure, while disruptive, would not derail generative AI’s popularity or OpenAI or Microsoft’s competitive advantage.

“The innovation created by OpenAI is bigger than any one or two people, and there is no reason to think this would cause OpenAI to cede its leadership position,” said DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria. “If nothing else, Microsoft’s stake and significant interest in OpenAI’s progress ensure the appropriate leadership changes are being implemented.”

As late as Thursday evening, Altman showed no signs of concern at two public events. He joined colleagues in a panel on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in San Francisco, describing his commitment and vision for AI.

Later he spoke at a Burning Man-related event in Oakland, California, engaging in an hour-long conversation on the topic of art and AI. Altman seemed relaxed and gave no indication anything was wrong, but left right after his talk was over at 7:30 pm.

The event organizer said at the event that Altman had another meeting to attend.

Fitbit Luxe fitness tracker design and specifications have reportedly leaked. A German publication has shared some details about the rumoured wearable along with a few images. The report says that Fitbit Luxe from the wearables company now owned by Google will come with a stainless-steel housing. Three colours can be seen in the images, along with a colour display. And the wearable is said to come with activity tracking and health monitoring features. As of now, Fitbit has not shared any information about Fitbit Luxe.

According to a report by WinFuture, Fitbit is working on a new fitness tracker that will be called the Fitbit Luxe. It says that the fitness tracker will be the company’s most elegant yet. It may come in black, soft gold/ white, and platinum/ orchid colour options. Fitbit Luxe is said to come with a stainless-steel housing, interchangeable classic buckle strap, and an OLED display. Other details about the display are currently unclear.

The report adds that the Fitbit Luxe will feature heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, activity tracking, stress monitoring, and more. It will support several workouts and have vibration notifications for heart rate. Fitbit Luxe is also said to come with GPS and water-resistance, which will allow it to be worn while swimming.

Furthermore, tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) has also shared images of the upcoming Fitbit fitness tracker on Twitter that resemble the ones shared by WinFuture. There is no information on its battery life, screen resolution, pricing, or release date. And Fitbit has not shared anything about the rumoured Fitbit Luxe.

Last month, the company released the Fitbit Ace 3, a fitness tracker for kids. It has a touchscreen PMOLED display and offers up to eight days of battery life on a single charge. It is water-resistant up to 50 metres, making it suitable for light swimming sessions and offers all-day activity tracking. The Fitbit Ace 3 is the first product to be launched after Google closed its $2.1 billion (roughly Rs. 15,320 crore) acquisition deal of Fitbit.

While just the sight of a spider can get many of us jumping out of our skin, have you ever wondered what a spider’s web sounds like? Well, a new study shows that it could send a shiver down your spine with its characteristic reverberating tune. Markus Buehler, an engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and his team has been studying spiderwebs using artificial intelligence.

Reuters quoted Buehler in a report saying that spiderwebs may offer an orchestra of information — ranging from communication to construction.

Speaking about the almost foreboding sound made by the web, he said, “Spiders utilise vibrations as a way to communicate with the environment, with other spiders.”

As part of the study, these vibrations from spiders were recorded. Then, artificial intelligence was used to learn these vibrational patterns and associate them with certain actions, the professor said. “Basically learning the spider’s language,” he added.

Buehler and his team created 3D models of spiderwebs. The models were based on different actions being carried out by the spiders, including construction, repair, hunting and feeding. Once the team was able to identify the pattern in the spider signals, the sounds were recreated using mathematical algorithms and computers.

Describing the arachnid to be “a whole different animal”, Buehler said, “What they see or sense isn’t actually audible or visible to the human eye or the human ear. And so by transposing it, we begin to experience that.”

Buehler further explained the nuance behind the sound produced. “The melodies are really the kind of relationships that the spider would also experience. And so we can begin to feel a little bit like a spider in that way,” he said.

The professor added that the living structure of a spiderweb could lead to innovations in construction, maintenance and repair. “We can imagine creating a synthetic system that would mimic what the spider does in sensing the web, repairing the web,” he said.

Scientists say the silk from a spiderweb is five times stronger than steel, the report added.

Buehler and his team hope that their work will help humans understand the language of spiders and communicate with them in the future.
